Enrollment has increased significantly at Abilene Christian University during the first summer session compared to last year's enrollment. Some of that increase may be attributed to the addition of online classes this summer.
"Students are taking advantage of ACU's summer offerings, including the new online courses," said Jack Rich, executive vice president. "It's encouraging to see more students staying connected with ACU during the summer."
Official numbers for Summer I show 1,028 students enrolled, which is an increase of 63 from last year's total. In addition, students enrolled in nearly 500 more credit hours than last year, an increase of 14 percent.
During Summer I, 43 students are taking online courses, accounting for about 130 credit hours. Summer I is the first session of ACU's new online courses program. The courses will continue in Summer II and during a third summer online semester that spans Summer I and Summer II.
"I'm very pleased with our first online offering," said George Saltsman, director of educational technology. "We've substantially exceeded our initial goals."
Classes in Summer I take place from June 1- July 1, and Summer II runs from July 6-Aug. 6. Summer Online Courses were introduced this yeara and currently include five sections each of two sophomore-level classes.
