Summer Workshops to focus on baptism, offer new classes for small churches

The annual Summer Workshops in the College of Biblical Studies at Abilene Christian University will focus on the theme "At the River’s Edge" July 29-31.  Baptism will be the the theme throughout the sessions on children’s ministry, adult faith formation, and a new seminar this year on small church ministry.  There will also be an opportunity on July 30 for ministers to become trained and certified in pre-marital counseling.  

Dr. Jeff Childers will be the featured speaker and will open and close the workshop with messages related to baptism from his recent book, co-authored with Dr. Frederick Aquino, called At the River’s Edge.

• Children's Faith Formation: Classes will be offered on a variety of ministry levels for those involved in children's ministry.  Sessions on cradle roll, early childhood, preschool, elementary, general children’s ministry, children's special interest and children’s worship will be offered each day of the workshop.

• Adult Faith Formation:  Classes will take their focus from Romans 12:1-2, when Paul calls Christians to spiritual transformation through mind renewal.  Sessions offered each day will center primarily on the importance of the life of the mind for growing deeper in faith.

• Small-Church Ministry:  Sessions will allow small-church leaders to focus on the challenges of smaller congregations, the roles of these congregations within their communities, the needs of small-church leaders and provides and opportunity for small-church leaders to network with one another for future ministering and assistance.

• Pre-Marital Counseling Training Seminar:  Pre-registration, due July 15, is required for this session offered Fri., July 30, from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.  The seminar includes training and certification by Richard Ellis through use of the Prepare-Enrich inventory of pre-marital counseling.  Robert Oglesby will continue the session with a presentation on developing a couples mentoring programs within a congregation.  For more information or to register online visit
