The introduction of online courses as a summer class option for students at Abilene Christian University has proven even more successful than anticipated with 231 students enrolled in the two sophomore-level courses being offered.
Each class, ENGL 221 Major British Writers I and BIBL 211 Message of the Old Testament, has five sections, and each section is at capacity.
"We set the limit at 200 for the first year to allow for some over enrollment," George Saltsman, director of Educational Technology at Abilene Christian University said. "We expect that there will be some attrition after students go back home and find jobs."
The courses were opened by the university as a way to provide alternatives to traditional summer school and provide a unique multi-media curriculum.
"The ACU Summer Online courses use a student-centered approach with attention being given to active learning," said Dr. Gary Tucker, director of instructional and faculty development. "Online students will be involved in team-based activities, role-plays, peer support and evaluations, and research projects. The content will be delivered in various formats utilizing the power of the Internet, modern communication and interactive multimedia."
Classes are being offered June 1 – Aug. 6, and additional classes will be offered as the program develops further. For more information, contact George Saltsman at (325) 674-2981 or visit www.acu.edu/summeronline.
