ACU displays local artist's sculpture

For immediate release
April 23, 2004

A sculpture by a local artist is featured in front of Abilene Christian University's Williams Performing Arts Center.

David Martin, ACU alumnus and graphic design artist for the Abilene Reporter-News, created "The Burden," which is now on display permanenetly at ACU.

Martin was inspired to create the piece when he saw the sculpture "Atlas," in front of Rockefeller Center on a Spring Break Campaign to New York City.  The 2001 graduate sculpted a small version of "The Burden" for an art class as a freshman, but it was not until three years later that Martin decided to build a larger version of the work as a part of an independent study class under the direction of Jack Maxwell, chair of the Department of Art and Design.

Martin's sculpture depicts Jesus carrying the world on his shoulders with a crown of thorns on his head.  The eight foot statue was welded together with stainless steel and took more than 300 hours to create.

Martin said he one day wants to add a cross design at the base of the statue.

"Each person may take something different from viewing the statue," Martin said.   "Basically, it is an image of Christ bearing the burden of the world's sins."
