Former White House press secretary Peter Roussel to visit ACU Monday

For immediate release
April 12, 2004

Peter Roussel, former White House press secretary to President Reagan, will visit Abilene Christian University Monday, April 19, for a lunch and book signing.

The luncheon will be at noon in the Teague Special Events Center and is sponsored by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. Roussel will speak on "The 21st Century Media and the 21st Century President: What to Watch for in Campaign 2004." Tickets are available through Tuesday, April 13, for $12 each by calling 325-674-2296. The book signing for his new novel, "Ruffled Flourishes," will take place just before the luncheon and is sponsored by Abilene Bookstore.

"Some opportunities are too good to pass up, especially during an election year," said Dr. Cheryl Bacon, chair of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. "That was my first thought when Peter Roussel agreed to come to lunch."

With more than 35 years in business, government, politics, public affairs and media, Roussel now serves as executive vice president of Neumann Roussel Public Relations.

From 1981-83 he served as deputy press secretary to Reagan and from 1983-87 as special assistant to the President and deputy press secretary. Roussel also was press secretary to U.S. Congressman George H. Bush in 1969, staff assistant to President Ford in 1974, and assistant to subsequent Chiefs of Staff -- Donald Rumsfeld and Richard Cheney.

He is now an on-camera commentator for ABC affiliate KTRK-TV in Houston and author of the novel “Ruffled Flourishes,” which draws on his experiences as a press spokesman in the White House. He has written articles for The New York Times and The Washington Post and is a frequent speaker on the press and the presidency.
