The Abilene Christian University A Cappella Chorus will present "Elijah," featuring professor emeritus Charles Nelson, as well as other ACU music students and faculty, on Thursday, April 15, in the Williams Performing Arts Center Recital Hall at 8 p.m. The concert is free and open to the general public.
A Cappella Chorus is a student vocal group dedicated to the study and performance of choral literature of all musical eras.
The chorus will perform an abridged version of "Elijah," an oratorio by Felix Mendelssohn. The concert will feature Nelson and Dr. Paul Piersall, professor of music and chair of the Department of Music, as Elijah. They will be assisted by Dr. Marion Cawood, professor of music; Julie Pruett, assistant professor of music and director of the Vocal Division of the Department of Music; Samuel Cook, visiting associate professor of music; and staff accompanist Cheryl Lemmons.
The performance will tell the story of Elijah's confrontation with the prophets of Baal, said Dr. Michael Scarbrough, director of the A Cappella Chorus.
"The music is absolutely thrilling," Scarbrough said. "There are moments of great emotion, whether in the prayer of Elijah feeling all alone and that everyone is trying to kill him or the great emotion of seeing the power of God work in our physical world. The music is really appropriate to each of those emotions. It is just thrilling."
