Dr. Fred L. Casmir will speak on his experience as a member of Hitler's Youth Corps and the Nazi Army and his conversion to Christianity on Wednesday, March 31, at a tour of the 12th Armored Museum at 1 p.m. and Thursday, April 1, in Cullen Auditorium at Abilene Christian University at 7 p.m. Both are free and open to the public.
In his presentation, "From the Swastika to the Cross," Casmir will speak on Germany's transition from a country lacking order and leadership to a country under the dictatorship of Hitler. He will address the issues of how a country following a dream of security and patriotism could allow the Holocaust to happen and if something similar could happen in the United States today.
After fighting on Eastern Front for the Nazi Army, Casmir met Otis Gatewood, long-time European missionary, and converted to Christianity. Casmir immigrated to the United States immediately after the war and earned an undergraduate degree in speech and religion in 1950, a graduate degree in speech and educational psychology in 1955, and a Doctor of Philosophy from Ohio State University in 1961. Casmir has taught at Pepperdine University for more than 30 years and is currently professor emeritus in the Department of Communication.
