ACU to sponsor educational leadership conference

For immediate release
Feb. 18, 2004

An educational conference for superintendents, principals and school leadership teams will be at the Abilene Civic Center Friday, Feb. 20.  Abilene Christian University and Region 14 Educational Service Center are sponsoring the leadership conference, "Leadership in an Age of Standards and High Stakes."

The purpose of the conference is to provide ideas and strategies for meeting challenges educators in public schools face and will feature guest speaker and former principal of East Hartford High school, Steve Edwards.  A nationally recognized, award-winning administrator noted for his innovative approach to school improvement, Edwards will be speaking about practical strategies for improving schools and will outline his path to success.

With state testing being administered in school districts throughout this week, Dr. Lloyd Goldsmith, director of the graduate education program at ACU, says the timing of the conference is no coincidence.

"Accountability systems are becoming more stringent, and principals and teachers are beginning to feel more pressure to perform and meet the new standards that are being set," said Goldsmith.  "This conference will provide new ideas and renewed enthusiasm for school districts as they try to provide a continuous mode of improvement."

Conference registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. with introductions by Dr. Dwayne Van Rheenen, ACU provost, at 9 a.m. Tickets are $79 per person and include refreshments, lunch and conference materials.  For more information about registration call 325-674-2112.
