ACU to honor Max Lucado with top alumni award

For immediate release
Feb. 3, 2004

Abilene Christian University has named Max Lucado, class of 1977, Outstanding Alumnus of the Year and will honor him at ACU's Alumni Day Luncheon Feb. 22.

Lucado's inspirational books have topped Christian best-seller lists and he serves as pulpit minister for the 4,000-member Oak Hills Church.

"We are proud of Max and his ministry through writing," said Dr. Royce Money, ACU president.  "His success in this area and the number of lives he has touched certainly measure up to the standard of excellence that has brought honor to ACU."

With a thriving national radio ministry, "Upwords," and more than 28 million copies of his 50 books in print, Lucado has become one of the nation’s most recognized and most popular ministers, making guest appearances on CNN's "Larry King Live" and meeting with the President and other government leaders.

Lucado, who grew up in the West Texas town of Andrews, received his undergraduate degree in journalism and mass communication and a master’s degree in Bible and biblical related studies from ACU.  He met Denalyn Preston (an ACU graduate of 1979) while on the ministry staff at Central Church of Christ in Miami, Fla., and they married in 1981, and the two served as missionaries in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 1983-87.  Lucado was hired as pulpit minister at Oak Hills Church in San Antonio in 1988.

He is the first author to win three Book of the Year awards from the Evangelical Christian Publishers' Association, and at least one of his books has appeared on the ECPA's best-seller list every month for the past 12 years.  In 1993, Christianity Today named Lucado one of the seven most admired Christian authors.  Lucado received ACU's Communications Department Alumnus of the Year award in 1987 and received the Excellence in Mass Media Award in 1995.

The Outstanding Alumnus of the Year Award is ACU's highest alumni honor, and is given for lifetime achievement.
