One of Abilene Christian University's masters programs has proven that hard work does pay off. The school psychology program received national approval in January from the National Association of School Psychologists.
This three-year program began in 1997 and has been building its curriculum since then to meet national standards.
"NASP took a hard look at our curriculum and faculty," said Dr. Robert McKelvain, chair of the Psychology Department. "We are pleased to have an outside professional organization document the quality of our school psychology program."
The approval allows for students who complete the program to become eligible immediately for national certification as school psychologists and allows them to get their license in almost any state.
ACU is the only school in the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities that has been nationally approved and is the only approved program between Dallas and El Paso.
"We as a university and as a department of psychology are committed to helping children and their families," McKelvain said, "School psychology is a high impact profession. Our students will be serving thousands of children and their families who are working hard to overcome disabilities and be successful in school."
