Beginning in Summer 2004, Abilene Christian University will offer selected summer school courses online as part of ACU's ongoing effort to provide new learning opportunities through technology, said Doug Darby, multimedia coordinator in the Adams Center for Teaching Excellence.
The courses will take place entirely online, allowing students the freedom to keep summer schedules, while still taking ACU courses.
"Given the availability of new technology for Internet access, students will have unprecedented flexibility in choosing the time and place to log on and do their class work," Darby said. "This flexibility offers a great degree of convenience while still requiring students to regularly interact with faculty and other students online."
Course work will be set at regular intervals with specific deadlines for assignments. Students will need a computer and Internet access, and must have strong time management and written communication skills to be successful.
As with all ACU courses, the faculty developing and teaching the classes will present the highest level of excellence and Christian perspective, Darby said.
Two popular sophomore level classes -- ENGL 221 Major British Writers I and BIBL 211 Message of the Old Testament -- will be offered online June 1 - Aug. 6. Additional classes will be offered as the program develops.
