For immediate release Oct. 2, 2003
Greg and Peggy Stirman of Sugar Land will be honored in Abilene Christian University's daily Chapel service Friday, Oct. 4, as ACU's 2003 Parents of the Year. Chapel will start at 11 a.m. in Moody Coliseum.
The Stirmans are the parents of Hayley Stirman, senior art major at ACU; Hilary Stirman, a 2001 ACU graduate; and Kathryn, a high school student.
Every year, ACU students are asked to nominate their parents for the Parents of the Year award with a written essay concerning why their parents should be Parents of the Year. Based on Hayley's essay, her parents were chosen.
"I always knew they were special, but being away from home for the past three years has made me realize just how wonderful they are," Hayley said in her essay. "They prepared me and my sisters not only to be hard working and motivated students, accepting friends, flexible teammates and loving partners, but also, and most importantly, firm believers and devoted followers of Jesus Christ."
Greg and Peggy both graduated from ACU in 1975. While at ACU, Greg played football and baseball and was a member of Galaxy men's social club. Peggy was a member of Sigma Theta Chi, the orchestra, the Homecoming Court and was named class favorite and runner-up to Miss ACU.
Dr. Gary McCaleb, university vice president, will present the award to the Stirmans at the conclusion of Chapel.
A reception to honor the Stirmans will take place immediately following Chapel in the Shore Art Gallery.
