Dwight Roberts of Houston, president and CEO of the U.S. Rice Producers Association, will speak to several classes in the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at Abilene Christian University on Tuesday, March 18.
Roberts, a graduate of Abilene Christian University and Abilene Christian High School, is a former director of international marketing for the Texas Department of Agriculture for Commissioner Rick Perry, now the state's governor.
Roberts will speak at 9:30 a.m. to combined classes of Agribusiness Management taught by Dr. Foy Mills and Natural Resource Management taught by Emmett Miller. At 1:30 p.m. he will speak to Mills' class on International Trade. Roberts will also talk at the departmental chapel at 11 a.m.
A 1974 graduate of ACU, Roberts worked for the state agriculture department from 1986 to 1998 before he was named CEO for U.S. Rice Producers. After graduation from ACU he also served three years in the Peace Corps in Paraguay.
Last year Roberts traveled with a five-member delegation from Texas and a film crew from the CBS news magazine "60 Minutes" to Cuba to explore the opening of U.S. trade there (he appeared on CBS Sept. 29, 2002). Since 1986 he has traveled often to Asia, Europe and South America representing the state agriculture department and U.S. Rice Producers.
He is married, and he and his wife, Zully, have three children. He is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Roberts of Abilene.
Roberts' talks are open to the public.
