Dr. Charlie Marler, long-time faculty member in Abilene Christian University’s Journalism and Mass Communication Department, will be honored with the Pioneer Award, given by the Southwest Education Council for Journalism and Mass Communication.
The award is presented to individuals who have made a significant contribution to journalism and mass communication education in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Texas or Utah, or who has played a significant role in supporting and enhancing the SWECJMC. The Pioneer Award is given at the discretion of the SWECJMC executive committee and is not an annual award.
"Ever since I became a journalism professor in 1984 and started teaching at Texas Tech, I have known Charlie Marler through the Southwest Education Council and have been impressed with his work at Abilene Christian and his work in helping get the Southwest Education Council established," said Roger Saathoff, 2002-03 president of the SWECJMC executive committee.
Former recipients of this award include Dr. Billy Ross of Texas Tech, Dr. Wayne Danielson of the University of Texas and Dr. Westmoreland of the University of North Texas.
"Few people are more deserving than Charlie for this recognition," Saathoff said.
Marler, who retired in May from full-time teaching at ACU, will receive the award at the SWECJMC's annual Southwest Symposium in Salt Lake City Nov. 7-8.
