A unique group of ACU students gather together each week, forming an on-campus support network, as Abilene Christian University reaches out to single parents through a weekly small group Chapel.
“Single Parents and Supporters Serving God” is a small group chapel created to provide a safe haven and support group for single parents and their children. Meeting weekly during regular chapel times, the group uses the sessions as an opportunity to discuss parenting and childcare issues as well as spend time in prayer and worship.
Dr. Debbie Williams, assistant professor of English and faculty sponsor for the group, said that the main misconception about the group is that the only participants are single parents.
“The actual attendance is about one third single parents and two thirds supporters,” Williams said. “The supporters play an important role in this group because they help surround the single parents with encouragement and provide a social setting.”
Started three years ago by an ACU student, the group is a way of meeting ACU's mission on a very personal level, says Williams. All are welcome to participate, whether single or with children.
"Anyone seeking to grow in the Lord has a connection with us and is welcome to attend," Williams said.
