Kesler encourages students to be salt, light, sheep

For immediate release
Aug. 25, 2003

Abilene Christian University opened its 98th session Monday at 11 a.m. with its annual Opening Assembly at Moody Coliseum. Dr. Jay Kesler, chancellor of Taylor University, issued the opening address, speaking about the role of Christians in the world.

Opening Assembly, conducted during the regular hour of the university's chapel service, began with a procession of the administration and faculty. Immediately following the academic procession, students carried the flags of the 49 states and 62 nations represented in this year's student body, creating a spectacular array of color and pageantry.

The devotional of the Opening Assembly was patterned after the first devotionals of every school year since the university was founded in 1906, including the hymn "All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name."

After introductions of educational, civic and government leaders, Kesler addressed the assembly, relating three biblical metaphors for Christians: salt of the earth, light of the world and sheep among wolves.

"You are entering college during an era that will change human history as never before," Kesler said. "For such a time as this, Jesus tells us how to go about it. We are to be the salt of the earth in all areas, living out the fruit of the spirit."

Following Kesler's address, the Opening Assembly concluded with the moving "Ceremony of Allegiance" and the presentation of the American flag.
