ACU to celebrate Earth Day with community activities

For immediate release
April 17, 2003

Abilene Christian University will feature activities for the entire ACU and Abilene community to commemorate Earth Day on Monday, April 21.

ACU students, faculty and staff, as well as members of the Abilene community, will get the chance to participate in a tree planting, learn proper tree-planting procedures and get more information on topics such as recycling and forestry.

From 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.tables will be set up in the McGlothlin Campus Center with information about organizations such as Keep Abilene Beautiful, Abilene Water Department, Texas Forestry Services, Abilene Recycling Center and County Extension Services.

At 1 p.m. on the open lot outside of Crutcher Scott Field, a tree planting demonstration and workshop will begin and will continue until 5 p.m. The workshop will be led by Byron Patterson, ACU’s director of physical resources, and representatives from the Texas Forest Service will participate as well. The trees and the organic material to be used in the planting have been grown at ACU’s tree farm.

After the first tree is planted, at approximately 2 p.m., a representative from Dyess Air Force Base will tie a yellow ribbon around the first tree planted to show support for the military in Iraq.

The Abilene community is invited to attend and receive hands-on instruction about tree planting and to participate in planting a tree.
