ACU freshman killed in Abilene car accident

For immediate release
April 16, 2003

Just a little more than a year after the deaths of five Abilene Christian University students from Nigeria in a car accident, the ACU community faces the loss of another student who died Tuesday evening in a car accident in east Abilene.

Robert “Robbie” Sommerwerck, a freshman undecided major from Cypress, was attempting to turn left onto Loop 322 in the construction area at the intersection of East Highway 80 and Loop 322 when a truck hit his vehicle on the driver’s side. The accident is still under investigation by the Abilene Police Department.

“The loss of any member of the ACU family is difficult for all of us,” said Dr. Royce Money, ACU president. “We are especially saddened at the sudden death of one of our freshman students. We ask that you keep ACU and Robbie’s family in your thoughts and prayers as we cope with his death.”

A memorial service for Sommerwerck is scheduled to take place sometime next week during ACU’s daily Chapel session at 11 a.m. in Moody Coliseum.

Sommerwerck’s funeral is planned for Saturday, April 19, at the Northside Christian Church in Spring. Visitation with the family is tentatively planned for Friday night at the Klein Funeral Home in Spring.
