Dr. Gary D. McCaleb, vice president of Abilene Christian University and executive director of the Center for Advancement of Community, will be the opening speaker Friday for the annual leadership meeting of the Southern Municipal Conference in Richmond, Va.

McCaleb also served on the Abilene City Council. His duties as mayor led him around the world, including service as the U.S. representative on the World Executive Committee of the International Union of Local Authorities and service with the National League of Cities.
McCaleb has been invited to speak at other national and international meetings, including Mauritius, Jerusalem, Prague, Sao Paulo, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Beijing, Cairo and Kiev. He has represented Abilene at international and national conferences and on a special trip to Abilene's sister city, Corinth, Greece.
A graduate of Anson High School and ACU, McCaleb received master's and Ph.D. degrees from Texas A&M University.
