Repentance means more than just feeling guilty, according to Dan Bouchelle of Amarillo, during his opening lecture of Abilene Christian University's 85th annual Lectureship Sunday evening.
"To repent means to change directions in every aspect of life," said Bouchelle, who preaches at Central Church of Christ in Amarillo. "Jesus calls us to be more than forgiven sinners; he calls us to be disciples - people who model their lives after His."
Bouchelle's lecture titled "Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven Has Come Near," was the first theme lecture in this year's theme of "Welcoming the Reign of God."
Bouchelle said both churches and individual Christians today need to repent and focus on following the example of Christ.
"We must overcome the idea that discipleship is optional for believers," he said.
However, Bouchelle warned against the tendency to make church into a business.
"The Kingdom of God is not something we create with our own efforts," Bouchelle said. "Church is not a business, but a people with a mission."
Other keynote speakers include Steve Weathers, assistant professor of English at ACU, speaking Monday at 11 a.m.; Jerry Rushford of Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif., speaking Monday at 7 p.m.; Jeff Christian of Tyler, speaking Tuesday at 11 a.m.; Tony Roach of Abilene speaking Tuesday at 7 p.m.; Chris Seidman of Farmers Branch speaking Wednesday at 11 a.m.; and Lynn Anderson of San Antonio speaking Wednesday at 7 p.m. All theme lectures will take place in Moody Coliseum.
