John Tyson honored by Abilene fund-raising professionals

The Abilene Chapter of the Association of Fund-raising Professionals awarded this year?s Outstanding Fund-raising Professional Award to Dr. John Tyson, Abilene Christian University's vice president of development, during the National Philanthropy Day annual luncheon on November 19.

In his current role at ACU, Tyson oversees the university's fund-raising and alumni relations programs. Tyson managed the successful Advancing the Changeless Campaign raising over $30 million from 1993 to 1995 and the To Lead and To Serve Campaign that exceeded its goal to raise over $114 million from 1996 to 2000. During this last campaign, the annual alumni giving percentage rate and the number of total donors per year tripled and the school set new records for its Annual Fund and overall annual giving. In addition, various campaign promotional pieces won regional CASE and Addy awards, the campaign video received national Telly and Crystal Communicator awards, and the university received a national Circle of Excellence Award from CASE for Overall Fundraising Improvement.

Tyson also served as the 2002 campaign chair for the United Way of Abilene Campaign that raised a record $2.2 million. Currently he chairs the Southern Africa Drought Relief Project that has raised over $125,000 for famine relief in Zimbabwe and Zambia.

A native of Hurst, Tyson received a bachelor's and master's degree from ACU and a doctor of philosophy degree from the University of Texas at Austin. He is active in several church and professional associations, and he serves on the boards of directors of various non-profit organizations. In addition, Tyson is a Certified Financial Planner.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals is the professional association for individuals responsible for generating philanthropic support for a wide variety of not-for-profit, charitable organizations. Founded in 1960, AFP represents 26,000 members in 169 chapters in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, working to advance philanthropy through advocacy, research, education, and certification programs.
