Abilene Christian University's annual Homecoming parade Saturday at 9:30 a.m. will include 21 floats and exhibits representing 55 ACU organizations and groups from the Abilene community, all with a Texas twist, in keeping with the "Paint the Town Purple - Texas Style" Homecoming theme.
Instead of convertibles, Homecoming queen nominees and other special guests will be greeting the crowd from the back of pick-up trucks, and each float will be designed with a Texas theme.
Community groups participating in the parade include the Army Reserve, Girl Scouts, The House that Kerry Built and Treadaway Kids. All classes and all ACU men's and women's social clubs will have a float, as will groups such as Hispanos Unidos, the Department of Industrial Technology, the International Students' Association, Aggie Club and the National Broadcast Society. The campus organizations will be competing for prizes for the best floats, including cash prizes of $250.
"Our alumni love to come back to watch the floats," said Amber Peck, director of alumni outreach. "Every year the parade gets bigger and better. Our students put a lot of hard work into making the parade a family-fun event. Our alumni truly appreciate and applaud the students efforts."
The parade will begin in the parking lot between Elmer Gray Stadium and the intramural fields on the north side of campus, then march down Ambler, turn left onto Campus Court, turn left on E.N. 16th, and end at Judge Ely.
The floats will also be on display at Shotwell Stadium during the Homecoming football game at 2 p.m.
