Abilene Christian University's annual Homecoming Golf Classic at Diamondback Golf Club on Friday will offer golfers more than just a chance to improve their score. They could improve the education of a student.
This year the Homecoming Golf Classic will benefit the V.W. Kelley Scholarship Endowment Fund. The V.W. Kelley scholarship is awarded each spring to one male and one female ACU student planning to attend graduate school. The alumni advisory board selects the recipients.
The tournament also offers golfers a chance to improve their own modes of transportation. A hole-in-one shot can win the golfer a Chevy Avalanche or a Mercury Mountaineer, donated courtesy of Mark Hanner at Hanner Chevrolet and Barry Pate at Lincoln-Mercury, respectively. In addition, a cash prize is available for a putting contest, sponsored by Frank Peck of RE/MAX.
The format is a four-person scramble with a shotgun start. Boxed lunches will be provided, and refreshments will be served throughout the course.
"Alumni look forward to the golf classic," said Amber Peck, director of alumni outreach. "We have many who play in it every year. They like to visit with their friends while they play."
The tournament is open to all ACU alumni, students, faculty and friends; registration costs are $85. Sign-ups are allowed up until the day of the classic. Those interested may contact Amber Peck at (915) 674-2622.
