Wellness Week at ACU to help students find peace

For immediate release
Sept. 23, 2002

Students at Abilene Christian University will have a chance to find peace in a troubled world during ACU's annual Wellness Week scheduled for Oct. 1-5.

The theme "Peace in a Troubled World" applies to physical, emotional, mental and spiritual peace, said Dr. Steve Rowlands, director of the counseling center at ACU.

"The theme represents the need for balance in our life," Rowlands said. "We have peace when we are able to have spiritual balance reflected in our physical, emotional, relational and spiritual health."

Events for the week include:

Randy Becton, adjunct faculty in Bible, missions and ministry, will speak on "Three Overlooked Areas of Wellness" at a brown bag lunch in the Hilton Room of the McGlothlin Campus Center 11:45 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Booths set up in the Hilton Room of the McGlothlin Campus Center from 10:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. will address depression, anxiety, stress and relationships. Free massages will be available, as well as prizes including a DVD player, a $50 gift certificate and a dorm-size refrigerator.

Students can find information about health and nutrition in the Hilton Room of the McGlothlin Campus Center from 10:30 a.m. - 1 p.m., including information about sports drinks and nutritional supplements, the importance of sleep and a demonstration of workouts students can do in residence halls.

Unstress Day will take place outside the McGlothlin Campus Center and will include a dunking tank, a rock climbing mountain, a bouncing box and other inflatable attractions.

Students, faculty and staff will participate in the American Heart Association 5-Mile Walk. ACU, Hardin-Simmons University and McMurry University will be competing in the Second Annual University Challenge for the highest participation in the walk.

Wellness Week is sponsored by the ACU counseling center, medical clinic, Department of Exercise Science and Health, and Campus Activities Team.
