ACU freshmen to conduct community food drive

For immediate release
Aug. 21, 2002

Nearly 1,400 Abilene Christian University students - including more than 1,100 new students - will learn by doing Friday when they canvas the city to collect nonperishable foods for the Food Bank of Abilene, hoping to meet or beat last year's food total.

This giant community service project is part of Welcome Week, Aug. 20-24, which is an annual time for freshmen and transfer students to bond with each other and prepare for the academic year. Classes begin at ACU Aug. 26.

Last year, Welcome Week students collected 20,000 pounds of food for the food bank, which equated to 13,000 meals, according to food bank director Jodi Houston.

This year, they plan to collect as much or even more, said Lori Gilmore, Welcome Week co-chair and senior integrated marketing communication major from Sandy, Utah.

Students will visit neighborhoods across Abilene Friday, Aug. 23, from 1-3 p.m. to collect food. If families want to ensure the students come by, they can call the ACU Volunteer and Service-Learning Center at 915-674-2932.

Individuals also may contribute financially to the "Feed the Hungry" student campaign. Houston said the food bank can purchase 10 pounds of food for every $1 collected.

"I think this project gives our incoming students a bonding experience, an opportunity to truly impact those in need in their new community, and a sense of pride for what they accomplish together," said Nancy Coburn, director of ACU's Volunteer and Service-Learning Center.
