For immediate release
July 30, 2002
This weekend, for the first time, African preachers and evangelists will travel to the U.S. to teach, preach and encourage at a major lectureship, rather than the other way around.
Jabulani Africa, scheduled for July 31-Aug. 4 at Richland Hills Church of Christ in North Richland Hills (near Fort Worth), is a celebration of the last 100 years of mission work in Africa.
Jabulani, a Zulu word for 'rejoice,' was initiated by ACU professor emeritus of missions, Wendell Broom, and Sam Shewmaker of Harding University. In addition, Highland Church of Christ in Abilene is one of eleven co-sponsoring churches.
The conference will begin Wednesday night, and ACU president Dr. Royce Money will introduce the beginning of Jabulani and the African speaker for the night. African speakers will speak Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., and roundtable discussions, panels, mission reports and small classes will fill the rest of the day. Sunday morning nearly 5,000 people are expected to gather for a service at the Birdville Fine Arts Complex and Stadium in North Richland Hills.
Sunday morning's service will pay tribute to the pioneers of African missions as well as the "African heroes of the faith who have done such an incredible work planting, preaching, and baptizing in Churches of Christ in Africa," Broom said.
After the past 100 years of mission efforts in Africa, the number of Churches of Christ in Africa now outnumber the Churches of Christ in the United States, Broom said.
