Gary McCaleb to speak at national chamber of commerce conference

Dr. Gary McCaleb, vice president of Abilene Christian University and former Abilene mayor, will share his years of community experience with the American Chamber of Commerce Executives on the opening day of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Leadership Conference July 28 in Pasadena, Calif.

McCaleb received the invitation to speak after Mick Fleming, president and CEO of ACCE, read a copy of McCaleb's latest book, "The Gift of Community: Reflections on the Way We Live and Work Together."

Fleming was given a copy of the book by Charlie Dromgoole, then-president of the Abilene Chamber of Commerce, and described the book as "a dead on hit for us."

McCaleb's speech will address several questions about community including.

  • Is community as important in the 21st century as it was in the past?

  • Why is building a community very different from building a city?

  • Who is responsible for building community?

  • What are the five keys to a strong community?

  • What is the one indispensable essential for assuring high quality community?

Following the presentation, McCaleb will facilitate a panel discussion involving several Chamber of Commerce executives.
