High school students from Japan visit ACU

For immediate release
July 18, 2002

Students from Japan's Ibaraki Christian High School are practicing their English and learning American culture this month in Abilene.

During the day, the 26 students take classes on subjects such as English conversation, American culture and word processing, as well as receive conversation tutoring and attend a daily Chapel service. In the evenings and on weekends, a group of seven ACU students are charged with showing the Japanese students what American youth do for fun.

Their outings include miniature golf, movies, swimming, the Abilene Zoo, cook-outs at the park and a visit to the historic town of Buffalo Gap.

High school students from Ibaraki Christian High School, located in Hitachi, Ibaraki, Japan, have been coming to ACU each July for eight years. The program began 10 years ago and was designed for college students from Ibaraki Christian College but has evolved into a program for high school students from the high school campus, said Jeff Haseltine, associate professor of foreign languages.

Haseltine, who has served on the faculty at Ibaraki Christian College, coordinates the program each year.

The students live in University Park Apartments on ACU's campus. The program lasts through August 3.
