New endowed scholarship honors church historian,
wife

An endowed scholarship fund in memory of the late Mr. and
Mrs. R.L. Roberts, Jr., of Abilene has been established at
Abilene Christian University.
The fund was started with a gift of $10,000 from the late
couple's four children. They are Garner L. Roberts of
Abilene, Carol Roberts Campbell of Flower Mound, Dwight A.
Roberts of Austin and Dr. John P. Roberts of San Antonio.
The six attended Abilene Christian.
The JohnE and R.L. Roberts, Jr., Endowed Scholarship Fund
will provide scholarships to graduate students in library
science and undergraduate female students in exercise
science and health.
R.L. Roberts, who died Sept. 12, 1998, was a library
faculty member at ACU for 21 years and a prominent church
historian. He was a minister and taught at Fort Worth
Christian College before joining the ACU faculty in 1966. An
elder for University Church of Christ, he directed tours to
many early church history sites and assisted in production
of films of church history in the U.S., Ireland, Scotland
and England. Books he recently contributed to include the
"New Handbook of Texas" by the Texas State Historical
Association, James Michener's "Texas" and a new book due in
2000 by Greenwood Press called "The Churches of Christ."
His wife, who died July 27, 1999, was a member of Women
of ACU and served as a clerk in the university's Department
of Exercise Science and Health for 19 years before her
retirement in 1992. She was named ACU's Employee of the Year
for 1991-92.
