ACU's Homecoming musical `Crazy For You' hits the
Abilene stage
For Immediate Release
Oct. 18, 1999
The 1999 ACU Homecoming musical is "Crazy For You," the
recent Broadway hit featuring the music and lyrics of George
and Ira Gershwin and a book by Ken Ludwig.
The audience will be treated to a number of favorite
Gershwin tunes such as "I Got Rhythm," "Someone to Watch
Over Me," "Slap That Bass," "Embraceable You," "Nice Work If
You Can Get It" and many more.
"The ACU orchestra is particularly excited about the
music of `Crazy For You,'" Steven Pounders, assistant
professor of theatre and musical director, said. "The score
is both challenging and fun to perform." Christopher
Anderson of ACU's music department will conduct the
orchestra.
Audience members should keep their eyes pealed for a few
on-stage musical cameos from professors in the ACU music
department, including Dr. Ed George on bass, and Cheryl
Lemmon on piano.
As the Gershwin music suggests, "Crazy For You" is filled
with dance. Choreographer Teri Wilkerson has worked hard
with the cast to provide the show with exciting tap, jazz
and softshoe numbers.
"Crazy For You" is a musical about celebration. New York
banker, Bobby Child, played by Patrick Mocorro, sophomore
theatre major from Albuquerque, N.M., and Nevada cowgirl,
Polly Baker, played by Jennifer Speck, junior theatre major
from Denton, fall in love as they attempt to save the old
west Gaiety Theatre from foreclosure. Bobby's scheme is to
enlist the aid of the town and "put on a show." These two
faces will be familiar to musical audiences as Eliza and
Doolittle in last year's "My Fair Lady."
The musical is directed by Pounders with musical
direction by Jeannette Lipford, costume designs by Sandy
Freeman, lighting designs by Gary Varner and a set from the
Starlight Musical Theatre in San Diego, Calif.
Performances are in the Abilene Civic Center at 8 p.m.
Friday and Saturday, Oct. 22 and 23, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct.
24. Tickets are $5 to $15. You may call the ACU Theatre box
office from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday at (915)
674-ARTS.
"Crazy For You" was the dream of a Texas entrepreneur and
Gershwin lover, Roger Horchow, who produced the show with
Elizabeth Williams in 1992. The show won over 10 awards,
including two Tony awards.
