For immediate release
July 6, 1999
The Abilene Christian University Alumni Association will
serve as host for Soul Lift in five cities this year: Los
Angeles; Newark, N.J.; Houston; Dallas and Chicago.
The first Soul Lift this year will be July 9 at Six Flags
Magic Mountain in Los Angeles. Brad Voss of ACU will be
speaking at the Grande Oak Picnic Pavilion at 6 p.m. Other
sponsors of this event include the Camarillo Church of
Christ and other Los Angeles area Churches of Christ.
On July 17, youth in the northeast will gather at Six
Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey. Invitations were sent
to churches from Minnesota to Virginia. The Manhattan Church
of Christ of New York and the Monmouth Church of Christ of
Tinton Falls, N.J., will help sponsor this day along with
other Northeast Churches of Christ. The guest speaker will
be Andy Spell from the Golf Course Church of Christ in
Midland, Texas.
The next Soul Lift will take place in Houston at Six
Flags AstroWorld on July 19. Gulf Coast area Churches of
Christ are helping sponsor this Soul Lift, and Dr. Ervine
Seamster of ACU and Marsalis Ave. Church of Christ in Dallas
will speak at 6 p.m. at the A&W Ranch.
The largest Soul Lift will be in Dallas at Six Flags Over
Texas on July 26. More than 7,000 youth are expected to
attend this year. Mike Cope, minister at Highland Church of
Christ in Abilene, and Jerome Williams, praise leader of
Farnett Church of Christ in Tulsa, Okla., will lead the
youth rally at 5 p.m. at the Highland Oaks Church of Christ.
Christian artists Jaci Velasquez and Avalon will be featured
in concert at 7:30 p.m.
The last Soul Lift will be held Aug. 8 at Six Flags Great
America in Naperville, Ill., near Chicago. The rally will be
held at Naperville Church of Christ, which is one of the
sponsoring churches. Mitch Wilburn of Park Plaza Church of
Christ of Tulsa, Okla., will speak at 7 p.m.
Bob Gomez, ACU senior alumni officer, said Soul Lift
began in 1984 in Dallas. Each Soul Lift event is designed
for Christian youth to gather for a day of fun at Six Flags
amusement parks under a spiritual umbrella. The days
conclude with a youth rally to generate excitement for
Christ among young people. After several years of success in
Dallas, Soul Lift was expanded to different Six Flags parks
across the United States.
