ACU Board of Trustees member, former board president dies

H. Lynn Packer, ACU Board of Trustees member for nearly 30 years and former board chairman, died Saturday in Dallas. He was 73.

"Lynn was a man of great passion for the Lord and his family and his school, Abilene Christian University," said Dr. Willam Teague, ACU chancellor and ACU president during Packer's tenure as chairman of the Board of Trustees. "He served long and well and effectively."

Packer had served ACU as a board member since 1972 and was chairman of the Board of Trustees from 1984-92. He had been a member of the senior board since 1998.

During his time as chairman, Packer was instrumental in raising funds for the Biblical Studies Building and served on the Presidential Search Committee in 1990. He was honored as ACU's 1984 Outstanding Alumnus of the Year, and he and his wife received ACU's Christian Service award in 1992.

Packer graduated from Mertzon High School and attended Abilene Christian University. He also received an honorary doctorate degree from Oklahoma Christian University.

He was a veteran, having served in the U. S. Navy. Lynn married Barbara Bell in 1951 and is survived by her and three children, Robert Packer and wife Lynn Dee, Barry Packer and wife Diane, and Lynda Panaretos and husband Jim; five grandchildren, Billy Packer and wife Lindsay, Clint Packer, Collin Packer, Clark Packer and Alexandra Panaretos. Barry Packer was named to ACU's Board of Trustees this year. Billy and Clint are current ACU students.

Packer was employed as a staff accountant with Ernst and Whinney from 1951 to 1954. In 1954 he became associated with Wyatt Cafeterias, Inc. and retired in 1990 as chairman of board and chief executive officer. Lynn was a member of the National Restaurant Association, International Council of Shopping Centers, Rotary Club, Dallas Assembly, Brookhaven Country Club and Northwood Club.

He served as an elder of the Walnut Hill Church of Christ from 1969 to 1996. He was a Trustee for the Bell Trust for 45 years, and served on the Advisory Boards for the Greenville Avenue Bank and Trust, and Liberty Mutual Insurance Company.
