ACU students launch Singing for the Elderly Ministry

For immediate release
Sept. 21, 2001

Abilene Christian University students began traveling to local nursing homes this week as part of the Singing for the Elderly Ministry.

The students visited the Covenant Place Retirement Center and sang church hymns for residents and talked with them for about an hour Thursday evening.

Organizers said establishing relationships with individual residents is the primary purpose of the ministry.

"My goal is to make sure the residents enjoy themselves and build some friendships with them that will last longer than just this year," said Annie Sprott, a junior biology major from Belton.

Starting Monday Sept. 24, the group will sing for residents at the Coronado Nursing Center every other week throughout the school year. Ministry members will carpool to each visit after meeting in the Mabee Business Building parking lot at 5:30 p.m.
