New students to get a taste of ACU during Welcome Week

Approximately 1,200 new students will be welcomed into Abilene Christian University during a week filled with fun, information and service. Welcome Week, led by students as well as the ACU First Year Program, has been a tradition for the past 17 years to introduce students to ACU and college life.

Monday, Aug. 20

10 a.m.-6 p.m. Welcome Week Check-In In the Living Room of the McGlothlin Campus Center, upperclassmen Welcome Week leaders (Steering Committee) will be helping to check-in the new students, give them Welcome Week T-shirts and answer questions about the week.

Tuesday, Aug. 21

11-11:45 a.m. Welcome Week Opening Session In Moody Coliseum Opening Session of Welcome Week begins the fun-filled, fast-paced week for the new students. Steering Committee members will welcome the new students in an exciting atmosphere.

11:45 a.m.-1 p.m. Grab 'n Go Lunch with Mentor Groups The new students will be eating sack lunches with their mentor groups at various locations all over campus before heading to the Food Drive.

1:30-4 p.m. Food Drive with Mentor Groups Mentor Groups will be visiting neighborhoods all across Abilene to collect food for the Abilene Food Bank. See previous Press Release.

8:30-9:30 p.m. Keynote Speaker Mitch Wilburn, youth minister from Tulsa, Okla., will be speaking to new students in Moody Coliseum.

9:30-11 p.m. Candlelight Devotional This Welcome Week tradition is what most new students say is their favorite part of Welcome Week. After the evening speaker, new students will walk to the Beauchamp Amphitheater through a walkway formed by returning students, mentor group leaders and steering committee members. At the amphitheater, each student will receive a candle and the lighting ceremony will commence. Mike Cope, Highland Church of Christ pulpit minister, will lead the devotional.

Wednesday, Aug. 22

Intramural Sports Intramural Sports competitions will be taking place throughout the morning on the Intramural Fields on the northwest corner of campus.

10-10:45 a.m. Mentor Group Meetings Mentor groups will meet several times throughout the week. Led by upperclassmen, the groups discuss academics, residential life, co-curricular activities and answer any questions the new students might have.

11-11:45 a.m. General Assembly Each day in Moody Coliseum the all of those involved in Welcome Week gather at General Assembly to meet ACU administrators or hear from one of the Welcome Week co-chairs about an ACU topic.

11:45 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Faculty Blessing/Lunch In Teague Special Events Center, the new students receive a blessing from faculty and staff.

2-5 p.m. High Tech/High Touch New students are introduced to the various ACU computing programs.

7-8 p.m. Keynote Speaker David Fraze, a Lubbock youth minister, will speak in Moody Coliseum.

8:30-10:30 p.m. Movie at Paramount Theatre

Thursday, Aug. 23

6:45-7:30 a.m. Sunrise Devotional To help "remind" students of this early morning devotional held on the east steps of the Biblical Studies building, Steering Committee members will be driving golf carts around the residence hall areas with bullhorns to awaken any oversleeping new students. Steven Moore, instructor of English at ACU, will lead the devotional.

10-10:45 a.m. Mentor Group Meetings (All over campus)

11-11:45 a.m. General Assembly (Moody Coliseum)

2-5 p.m. High Tech/High Touch

5:30-7:30 p.m. Departmental Dinners Students will group according to their major and eat dinner with faculty and other students in their same field. The dinners will be held at various locations all over campus.

8-9 p.m. Improv Comedy Four Day Weekend, an improvisations comedy troupe from Fort Worth will perform in Moody Coliseum.

Friday, Aug. 24

9 a.m.-noon Job Fair NOTE: location correction from previous advisory. In the double gyms in the Scruggs Gymnasium (adjacent to Moody), students will be able to find more information about on- and off-campus jobs.

10-10:45 a.m. Mentor Group Meetings (All over campus)

11-11:45 a.m. General Assembly (Moody Coliseum)

5:30-7:30 p.m. Barbecue Students will eat barbecue on the front lawn (mall area) in front of the McGlothlin Campus Center.

8:30-10 p.m. Friday Frenzy Also on the front lawn (mall area), a local band will provide entertainment, along with large inflatables such as a rock climbing mountain, a bungee run, etc.

Saturday, Aug. 25

8-10 p.m. Welcome Week Talent Show In Moody Coliseum, new students will have the opportunity to show off their talent, while upperclassmen hosts and hostesses show off their comedic talents.
