LAWRENCE, Kan. - Emily Petr, a Lawrence Free State High School senior who is a National Merit Finalist, signed a letter of intent to attend Abilene Christian University today at 1:30 p.m. at her school.
By signing the letter, Emily accepted a full-tuition scholarship to ACU. Her parents are David and Mary Beth Petr of Lawrence, Kan.
ACU is a private, four-year university in Abilene, Texas, that is recognized as one of "America's 100 Best College Buys," as a "Best Value" and as one of the nation's "Best Christian Colleges."
Anna Heaps, ACU admissions counselor, said ACU emphasizes the importance of academic achievement and rewards success such as Emily's with full-tuition scholarships.
"Many schools conduct formal signings for athletes, but few, if any others, currently have signing ceremonies for top academic students," Heaps said. "We value academics in the same way many schools value sports."
Petr has maintained high grades during her high school years, excelling in theater, vocals and forensics.
She has been active in choir and was named "top choir member." She was selected as drum major for her high school's marching band. She has been named to the Honor Roll for three years. She also has been an active member of Wheatland Church of Christ.
