To celebrate National Poetry Month in April, Abilene Christian University's Poetry Workshop class will participate in a Rent-a-Poet event at The Abilene Bookstore downtown for Artwalk April 12. Artwalk is a monthly evening art festival in downtown Abilene.
Student poets, under the direction of ACU writer-in-residence Al Haley, will set up a table in the bookstore at 174 Cypress Street and write poems on demand for $1 each.
This is the third year for the annual event. Haley praised the students for the quality of previous productions.
"I have students practice for several weeks in advance so they will become very quick on their feet," he said. "They produce some surprising epiphanies, and they always try to keep the language fresh."
In the past, students have tackled such diverse topics as "my pet dog," "something for my child's birthday," "a boyfriend who dips and I think it's gross" and "the fate of the human race." Those who desire a personal poem will receive a nice laser-printed copy within 20 minutes of their request.
"The goal is to make original works of art that someone will be proud to give," Haley said.
