ABILENE - Dr. Royce Money, president of Abilene Christian University, received the Volunteer Service Award from United Way of Abilene during Tuesday's annual meeting.

This award, begun in 1989, is the highest honor presented by the United Way, said Bill Ehrie, chairman of the Board of Directors. It recognizes a lifetime of community service and commitment to volunteerism.

Money was introduced by Scott Dueser, president of First National Bank of Abilene, who received the award in 2000.

"This year's recipient is truly a servant-leader," Dueser said. "He is truly a family man and an outstanding example to each of us. Not only does he write about building stronger families, but he puts his written and spoken words into practice by building stronger families, a stronger university, stronger churches, stronger Christians and a stronger community."

In addition to marking his 10th year as president in 2001, Money is a lecturer, professor, preacher, civic leader and author of two books designed to strengthen families, Dueser explained.

"As president of Abilene Christian University, he has led this school to greater heights and the designation of being one of the top universities in the United States," said Dueser. "I appreciate how he allows the Lord to work through him to accomplish God's will."

The criteria for the Volunteer Service Award include a commitment to service to others, determination and persistence in fulfilling volunteer obligations, loyalty and integrity, active involvement in community activities other than United Way, and a dedication to helping people in Abilene.

"I love the United Way," Money said in his response. "I love living and working in what has to be the volunteer center of America - Abilene, Texas. This is the greatest place to live and work. God bless every one of you."
