Abilene Christian University will conduct its first Black Alumni Family Reunion Feb. 9-10. ACU's Office of Student Multicultural Enrichment is sponsoring the event.
The weekend is being billed as "Family Talk" weekend.
LaShae Sloan, director of student multicultural enrichment, said, "The weekend is designed for black alumni to catch up with old friends, get to know current ACU students and share thoughts on how they think ACU can improve in the area of multicultural enrichment."
Activities for the two-day event will include panel discussions on past, current and future issues for black students, recreational activities, excursions to Abilene's Grace and Black History museums, plays and special meal times.
An ACU student group, Essence of Ebony, will present its third annual Black History production Friday evening at 7 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. This year's stage production is titled "Back to Our Roots."
On Saturday evening, the Prairie View A&M Charles Gilpen Players will present "Young, Gifted & Black" at 7 p.m. at Abilene High School's auditorium.
While serving as a reunion for black alumni, the weekend also will serve as a catalyst to promote more communication.
"We want to learn from our black alumni's experiences as students at ACU and to share with them some of the new and encouraging developments that have occurred at ACU over the past few years," Sloan said. "We also want to talk about goals for the future. We're excited, and we want to share that excitement."
The registration fee is $15 per person. To register or for more information, call ACU's Office of Student Multicultural Enrichment at (915) 674-6562.
Along with the Office of Student Multicultural Enrichment, other partners include the ACU Alumni Association, Office of the Provost, Office of the Chancellor and Office of the President.
