Kari (Dorsey) Leong has been named the Young Alumnus of the Year for Abilene Christian University. Leong, 1984 ACU graduate, is the principal for Abilene's Jane Long Elementary School.

Leong is the second woman to receive the Young Alumnus of the Year award. Last year, April Anthony was the first woman to receive the award.

When choosing the Young Alumnus of the year, ACU recognizes professional achievement and distinguished service to ACU. To be eligible, the recipient must not have reached 40 years of age.

Leong , who graduated with a degree in education and journalism and mass communication, grew up in Chicago and graduated from a New Jersey high school at the age of 16. She and her 17- and 18-year-old sisters began their freshman year of college together at Michigan Christian College, which is now Rochester College.

Later transferring to ACU, Leong was instrumental as a student in starting the Cultural Excellence Organization at ACU.

Mark Meador, director of Alumni Relations, said Leong was chosen "for her achievement as a leader in the Abilene Independent School District, her strong spiritual commitment, and also her dedication to her family."

She will be presented with the award, Saturday during ACU's Homecoming Chapel at 11 a.m. A reception to honor Leong will immediately follow Homecoming Chapel in the College of Biblical Studies Hall of Servants. The reception will start at approximately 11:45 a.m.
