Friday at 6 p.m. Abilene Christian University students will congregate outside the campus center to support the football team at the first of many pep rallies this year.
The pep rally has been planned and executed by Josh Jones, senior youth and family ministry major from Arlington; Cody Huffman, director of sports marketing; and the Student Involvement Team advisory board.
The purpose of the pep rally is "to promote school spirit and excitement for ACU athletics," Huffman said.
The pep rally will include exhortations from Gary Gaines, head football coach, two football players, ACUs Big Purple band, cheerleaders and mascot Willie the Wildcat. The pep rally will last approximately 30 minutes.
"We are trying to encourage all the faculty and staff to come and bring their families. We want every student possible to be there to show support for our student athletes," Jones said. "We want this to be an opportunity to show our support for our student athletes. They are representing ACU out on the field, and we want to show our appreciation for that."
More pep rallies are in the works for the night before every home football game this year, Jones said.
Plans for these future pep rallies include awards for the classes or clubs that have the highest attendance at the rallies or with the best cheer or even an award for the dorm with the best decorations.
At the pep rally Friday students will be introduced to the fight song and hear more about the Wild Zone student section at Shotwell Stadium.
The Wild Zone will be a student section for all home football games located on west side of Shotwell next to the Big Purple band section.
"The section is designed for ACU students to express their Wildcat pride and participate in an active and exciting atmosphere geared for the true Wildcat fans," Huffman said.
