ACU employee identifies need, devises unique fund-raising plan to help a student financial crisis
For Immediate Release
April 18, 2000
Ellen Presley, (915) 674-2181
Ellen Presley in Abilene Christian University's Center for International and Intercultural Education has identified a severe financial need of an ACU student from a foreign country (whom Presley wants to remain anonymous at this time.)
The student recently lost a significant portion of her income because her job was discontinued. Although the student has not asked for help, Presley said she sees significant need and has devised a plan.
Saturday, April 22, Presley will have a garage sale (of sorts) at her home from 8 a.m. to noon at 733 Parsons. She is calling it a "garage give-away."
The garage will be full of typical garage sale items, but instead of the items being priced and purchased, shoppers will be given the chance to donate money as they are moved to in order to help with this student's expenses. In return for their donation, they can take whatever merchandise they think equals their donation.
"You give of your money to help with the tuition cost of an ACU student from foreign country who is in need," Ellen said, "and you take away whatever you need!"
If people wish to donate merchandise for this pseudo-sale or money to help with the situation, contact Presley at 674-2181.
Also, all interested are encouraged to mark Saturday morning on the calendar and stop at 733 Parsons between 8 a.m. and noon to support the effort.
"I don't make a million myself, but I have stuff in my garage that can be useful to someone else," Presley said. "I don't want to spend my time putting a price tag on all the items I've already thought of giving away. This way, I may be able to help a student."
