Abilene Christian University honored four employees with significant awards Friday night at its annual Faculty/Staff Appreciation Dinner.

Two awards were presented for Outstanding Staff Members of the Year, as well as the Unsung Servant Award and the Faculty Senate Award.

Sandy Byers, KACU administrative coordinator, and Vicki Britten, supervisor of development operations, were named ACU's 1999-2000 Outstanding Staff Members of the Year.

Byers has been instrumental in KACU fund-raising for more than 10 years. Her co-workers describe her as a person with a contagious positive attitude who keeps things running smoothly.

Britten oversees all of the data aspects of development, maintaining records and files that every office of campus accesses. Her co-workers describe her as a stickler for being correct and a deeply spiritual woman who is professional and sensitive, never shirking hard work or responsibility.

Mark Lewis, director of spiritual life and student ministries, received the Unsung Servant Award, which honors a non-faculty member whom students nominate for being especially helpful and caring to them

Lewis was honored for ensuring opportunities are open to students to participate and grow socially, academically and most importantly, spiritually. Co-workers describe him with a constant willingness to help and a Christian spirit that encourages.

Dr. Charlie Marler, professor of journalism and mass communication, received the Faculty Senate Award for his dedication, service and role model as a faculty member.

He began his ACU career as the assistant director of publicity in 1955 - the day after he graduated from Abilene Christian. Later he became the sports information director and then the director of information and publications.

Marler is an accomplished teacher, editor, writer, and his fellow faculty members said he has done it all with a Christian servant's heart.
