On Thursday, Jan. 27, on McCaleb & Co., Dr. Gary
McCaleb, ACU vice president, will interview Sammy Baugh, a
Texas Midwest resident who's career as a professional
football player earned him the title "one of football's iron
men."
The weekly television show airs at 7 p.m. on cable
channel 7, then again at 10 p.m. It features McCaleb
conducting informal interviews with colorful personalities
from Abilene and the Texas Midwest region.
Sammy Baugh
Baugh, an icon for the Washington Redskins, has thrown
more touchdown passes than anybody in Redskins history.
More than Sonny Jurgensen. More than Joe Theismann. More
than Billy Kilmer, Norman Snead and Gus Frerotte combined.
During his 16 year career from 1937-52, Slingin' Sammy
Baugh completed 187 passes in the end zone. Adding to his
accomplishments he also racked up 22,585 yards passing to go
along with his 1,709 career completions, both third on the
list in Redskins history.
In his 16 seasons in the league, Baugh took the Redskins
to two world championships and four division titles. He led
the league in passing six times, including a 70.3
completion percentage in 1943, led in punting four straight
years and was tops in the league with 11 interceptions in
1943. He did all of this in the days where pads were scarce,
helmets were leather and players were active for 60 minutes
a game.
