Notable Alumni Athletes of ACU

ACU student-athletes have gone on to do great things beyond the competitive years of their collegiate careers.

For example, former all-America baseball player Joel Wells, M.D., earned academic all-America honors at ACU and graduated near the top of his class at Tulane University Medical School. He's currently the Harvard Combined Orthopedic Surgery Resident at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Former NCAA Division II women's track and field all-America and national champion Camille Coates-Clark, M.D., is now an orthopedic surgeon based in Palatka, Fla., and former men's basketball player Samuel Maroney, M.D., is an orthopedic surgeon in Abilene.

Former men's track and field all-America and national champion Gilbert Tuhabonye - who escaped genocide and an attempt by a rival tribe to kill him as a young man in Burundi - is now the director of Gilbert's Gazelles Running Club in Austin and is the most popular running coach in Central Texas, as well as a sought-after motivational speaker.

Former ACU men's track and field runner Paul Carrozza founded RunTex University and RunTex Events in Austin. A former member of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports under George W. Bush, Carrozza and RunTex Events produce more than 120 events each year and raise more than $5 million annually for local charities.

Lance Barrow is the Emmy Award-winning coordinating producer of golf and football for CBS Sports.

  • Dr. James Womack

is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology at Texas A&M University who discovered the genome for cattle and won the prestigious Wolf Prize in Agriculture.

  • Bobby Morrow

Bobby Morrow is a successful rancher in South Texas who won three gold medals in the Olympics and was named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year for 1956.


  • Earl Young

Earl Young is an international business entrepreneur who won a gold medal in the 4x400 relay at the 1960 Olympic Games.

  • Wilbert Montgomery

Wilbert Montgomery is an assistant coach for the NFL's Baltimore Ravens and a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. He is a former all-pro running back for the Philadelphia Eagles and that team's all-time leader in rushing attempts, rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.

  • Jeev Milkha Singh

Jeev Milkha Singh is a member of the PGA Tour and European Tour, and a former winner of the Asian Order of Merit.
