Special Events

The ACU Counseling Center hosts ongoing events in order to establish a relationship with students, faculty and staff. In an effort to better meet the emotional needs of those on campus we have the following events to educate, encourage, and edify the ACU body. We invite you to participate in this journey by joining us in the many activities on campus.

Stop by the Counseling Center and a counselor will work with you to identify which of the resources at our center is the best fit for your needs and goals. Given that a wide variety of personal difficulties can be addressed in the context of a workshop, students seeking other services at the Counseling Center may be asked to complete one of these services first or in conjunction with therapy. (Data shows that students report higher benefit from workshops and group therapy as compared to just individual therapy.) Students are encouraged to communicate openly with their screening counselor regarding any additional needs.

All Wellness workshops are offered free of charge. Given that the subject of each workshop builds from week to week, committed students are typically asked to attend all sessions of a workshop.

Annual Events

Suicide Prevention Walk - Saturday, April 7

Married Student Retreat
Each February, the Counseling Center hosts a retreat for currently enrolled ACU students who are married. Speakers from the Center for Healthy Relationships out of John Brown University come to Abilene to facilitate a special weekend for couples to strengthen and grow their marriages.

Making Choices Week
Many college students are at an integral time in their journey, making choices that affect their lives profoundly. Each spring, the Counseling Center hosts events that focus on current issues and encourages discussion and conversation regarding the choices they are facing.

Premarital Counseling Chapel Series - Friday, March 23

Beginning each year in March, the Counseling Center offers a 6 session chapel series specifically for engaged or soon-to-be engaged couples.

This Premarital Counseling Chapel Series is designed to help build stronger relationships and marriages by helping couples celebrate their strengths and identify their growth areas, encouraging couples to dialogue about their relationship in meaningful and productive ways, increasing practical relationship skills in Communication, Conflict Resolution, Closeness, Flexibility, and Financial Management, and increasing understanding of relationship issues in such areas as Personality, Affection & Sex, and Family of Origin.

Upon completion of the chapel series and the follow-up sessions, couples will be eligible for a $60 discount of their marriage license from Twogether in Texas. It is extremely important that each couple attend each session in order to receive the Twogether in Texas certificate.

The cost is $35 per couple, which is paid directly to PREPARE/ENRICH and includes the PREPARE/ENRICH Inventory and a workbook for each person.
