GPA Calculation Examples

Semester GPA

A student takes 15 hours, makes three A’s and two B’s.

By using our formula, 54.0 quality points ÷ 15 hours, we know that this student's first semester GPA is 3.6.

Fall Freshman Year Quality Points= (hours attempted x grade points awarded)
BIBL 101 3 hrs A 3 hrs x 4.0= 12.0
ENGL 111 3 hrs B 3 hrs x 3.0= 9.0
BIOL 101 3 hrs B 3 hrs x 3.0= 9.0
CORE 110 3 hrs A 3 hrs x 4.0= 12.0
ART 101 3 hrs A 3 hrs x 4.0= 12.0

The same student takes 13 hours his/her second semester and makes two A’s, two B’s and a C.

By using our formula, 40.0 quality points ÷ 13 hours, we know that this student's second semester GPA is now 3.076.

Spring Freshman Year Quality Points= (hours attempted x grade points awarded)
BIBL 102 3 hrs A 3 hrs x 4.0= 12.0
ENGL 112 3 hrs B 3 hrs x 3.0= 9.0
PSYC 120 3 hrs C 3 hrs x 2.0= 6.0
MATH 120 3 hrs B 3 hrs x 3.0= 9.0
PEAC 100 1 hr A 1 hrs x 4.0= 4.0

Cumulative GPA

Cumulative GPA is not the average of each semester GPA.

By using our formula, 94.0 quality points ÷ 28 hours, we know that this student's cumulative GPA is 3.357.
