Jazz Auditions

Auditions for the Jazz area (Jazz Ensemble and Combos) typically take place the first week of the fall semester. Sign up outside Dr. Rogers' office door. Auditions can also be arranged outside of the first week so please contact Dr. Rogers anytime if you are interested in jazz at ACU.

Note: this is a low stress audition.

Trumpet, Trombone, Saxophone*

  • Short sight reading excerpt in jazz style
  • Short prepared solo, etude, or excerpt in any style; does not have to be jazz (but it can be)
     

*Other instruments such as flute, clarinet, violin, etc. can audition as well. Contact Dr. Rogers.

Piano, Guitar

  • Short sight reading excerpt with changes/chord progressions, interpreted in the appropriate style
  • Short prepared solo, etude, or excerpt in any style; does not have to be jazz (but it can be)
     

Bass

  • Short sight reading excerpt with written out bass line
  • Short sight reading excerpt with changes/chord symbols, interpreted in the appropriate style
  • Short prepared solo, etude, or excerpt in any style; does not have to be jazz (but it can be)
     

Drums

  • Demonstrate various styles (swing, rock, Latin, shuffle, etc.), as many as you feel comfortable
  • Short sight reading excerpt of a swing chart for big band with notated “hits”
