Shadowing an Ob-Gyn

I was privileged to spend close to 15 hours shadowing an OB-GYN working at Abilene Regional Hospital with over 20 years of experience in the field. During this time, I learned more about the field of obstetrics and gynecology, about being a Christian professional, and about my own future pursuit in this field.

I wasn’t sure how much new information I would learn by shadowing an OB-GYN since I felt fairly educated in this area, however, I learned more than I expected about the workings of a doctor’s office and the actual practices of an OB-GYN. I thought the field was fairly narrow, but the range of cases and patients kept my shadowing experience highly interesting and educational. In my two weeks of shadowing, I was able to observe patients ranging from teenagers to the elderly and see cases that ranged from routine office visits to a C-section delivery.  The doctor was exceptionally patient and took the time to go over each case with me and explain the patient’s history, current situation, and the course of action that needed to be taken to address the situation.

It was also a blessing to be able to work with a doctor who shared the Christian faith. I was uniquely privileged to shadow a doctor who attends the same congregation that I do. I was so encouraged to be able to see the doctor’s behavior and attitude in his workplace that matched how he was in a church setting. Seeing how professionally he treated his patients and employees challenged me to provide my future patients and employees with that same level of quality and respect.

After shadowing, I am more confident that I want to pursue specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. Most of all, this experience has reassured me that continuing on the Pre-Med track is a good choice for my future. I loved being in a medical setting and interacting with patients on a personal level. I even learned that I can handle watching a prolonged C-section and actually enjoy learning about the process without being “grossed out!" Overall, I’ve learned that being a doctor requires a great deal of hard work and dedication, but if you truly love what you do, it is such a rewarding career. I was so blessed to have this opportunity. I discovered so much through this process and am looking forward to future shadowing opportunities.
