Galileo. Rembrandt. Luther. Edison. Shakespeare. Mozart. Each of these individuals was engaged in a pursuit - the pursuit of understanding, the pursuit of ideas, the pursuit of enlightenment. We invite you to join in your own pursuit, as you embark on a journey of research and creative expression at ACU.
ACU's Quality Enhancement Plan is titled "Pursuit: A Journey of Research and Creative Expression."
As ACU students graduate and enter careers as Christian servants and leaders impacting the world, one thing that sets them apart for employers and graduate/professional schools is the rigorous hands-on experience they gained at ACU. Many of our students conduct research, develop business plans, publish the written word, present at conferences, perform on stage or exhibit original artwork. These experiences develop their thinking and enhance their education as Christ-centered global leaders.
The Pursuit program will provide more opportunities for more students to participate in these experiences of research and creative expression. Pursuit will equip all students to effectively find, assess, apply, synthesize and create information; and will empower more students than ever before to engage in faculty-guided work and to publish, present or perform the results of that work.
Explore. Create. Express.
The Pursuit program is divided into three parts: Explore, Create, Express.Think of it as a pyramid with three sections. The base, which includes all ACU students during their freshman and sophomore years, is called Explore. The middle section, called Create, is divided between creating a research project in a specific course required by all students, and conducting faculty-guided research - an opportunity available to select students. The top of the pyramid - Express - is for top students who have completed research or produced work and are willing to publicly share their findings at conferences, in publications or in a public campus setting such as ACU's annual Undergraduate Research Festival.
Let's take a closer look:
- In your Cornerstone class, you will learn how to access and use appropriate scholarly sources
- In your Integrated Core 2 class, you will learn how to generate researchable questions, develop strategies to seek answers, evaluate sources, and use information to complete a paper or project
- In your subsequent ACU classes (particularly your majors classes), you will continue to apply these skills as you conduct research and prepare for writing or creative assignments
- In life, you will use these techniques to explore answers and satisfy your curiosity.
- In your majors classes, you will create scholarly and/or creative works (papers, presentations, plans, podcasts, artwork, performances, etc.) stemming from or inspired by research you have conducted
- In your Capstone class, you will develop, present and evaluate a similar scholarly or creative work in an area interesting to you and relevant to your major
- In an independent project guided by an ACU faculty member (and perhaps funded by an ACU grant), you may research and develop an original scholarly or creative work in an area interesting to you and relevant to your major
- In life, you will continue to create scholarly, creative and professional products for your future education, career, ministry, family or personal interest.
- After researching and creating work for a class or faculty-guided project, you may submit your scholarly or creative work to the Undergraduate Research Festival; if accepted, you will present your work to ACU faculty and students during the Festival
- After researching and creating work funded by an ACU grant, you will submit a paper based on your project
- After researching and creating work through any of these channels, you might present your scholarly or creative work to an audience outside ACU - for example, at peer-reviewed regional or national conferences
- In life, you will express the results of your work to employers, clients, coworkers, family, friends and the world through written, visual, oral or online media.
