Zona Luce

Zona Luce came to West Texas in 1889 and married John N. Luce in 1891.  The couple moved to Spur in 1912 where she lived until her death in 1970 at the age of 101.

Early in 1928, Mrs. Luce and her late husband gave Abilene Christian University 620 acres of land in Dickens County valued at $16,000 on an annuity plan.  It was the second five-figured gift in the history of the school.

This gift by the Luce couple, along with a gift of $30,000 from Mr. and Mrs. E.D. Chambers in 1929, enabled Abilene Christian to make definite plans to build the new campus in the northeast part of Abilene.

Today, the Zona Luce Building, one of the original buildings on campus, houses the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.  Renovations completed in 1997 provide enhanced lab facilities and technologically advanced classrooms.
